Training Program
Our puppies begin their training from the moment they join the Courage Service Dogs family. For the first month, they are placed in a one of our Starter foster training homes. They will begin their acclimation training right away by being desensitized to new people, dogs, sounds and smells. This early introduction to their environment is essential to their future work as a service dog. They also learn essential potty training skills based on commands.
At about 12 weeks of age, the puppy will be placed in a Training foster home. They will start learning obedience skills and further expand their desensitization skills by beginning their public accessing training. They will attend field trips and training outings with the other puppies in training and spend more time out in public with their foster family.

All of our beginning obedience classes are taken at The Canine Coach. Fosters are able to choose one of their five locations throughout the Twin Cities. This allows the fosters to schedule the classes based on their schedule, while maintaining a consistent obedience program for all foster families. We appreciate the Canine Coach's commitment to our training program and their constant support of Courage Service Dogs!
The Canine Coach also has a wide variety of "fun" classes, which we use to supplement the obedience classes. These classes include including agility, rally obedience, luring, treibball, and more. We find this helps to develop obedience in an entertaining environment (for both the puppies and their foster families). Our pups work hard and play hard. This mix gives them a well-rounded lifestyle which makes them happy and healthy in their progression through their training program.

In addition to obedience classes, our puppies will start learning basic service dog skills. Once they have perfected their obedience and public access skills, the search for a recipient will ensue. Additional service dog tasks will be added once a recipient is selected. Each service dog will learn tasks based on the specific needs of their recipient.
